Why Shiplee Studio?

When you type How do you name your business into a Google search, you get 7,160,000,000 results…

But there was one checklist I really liked from the WebAlive blog - Things to Consider Before You Pick a Name for Your Business:

  1. Legal considerations - registering your business.

  2. Be descriptive but not too general or vague - don’t be boring.

  3. Use related words in a creative way - puns are fun.

  4. Keep it simple - it’s okay to be clever…but don’t overdo it.

  5. Don’t copy your competitors - obviously you need to stand out amongst them so having a similar name won’t help you.

  6. Avoid using your own name - your name is Stanley…but that doesn’t tell me about your business.

  7. Choose a name that’s scalable - just in case your business evolves from being just service based to selling products.

For me, I wanted something original but still relatable to me. I started to think about what was important to me…my family.

My decision making process:

  • My last name is Shipard (family name from my father’s side)

  • My mother’s maiden name is Lee (family name from my mother’s side) and sister’s middle name

SHIP + LEE = ME

Why STUDIO?
I imagine my creativity as a mix media approach, designing on a computer, painting on canvases, drawing on anything I can - so when I picture a space of where I create, I imagine a giant studio with different sections for different media.

You obviously can’t start your business without choosing a business name. The process depends on you and your industry, so you want to select something that’s memorable and communicates what your business is. Always keep in mind your competitors and how you can differentiate yourself from them. “Customers associate a business name with the value it provides to them.”
