The Art of Creativity | Taika Waititi | TEDxDoha

Whenever Amber finds something on Instagram/Facebook/online she knows I will love, like baby turtle videos, hilarious dog memes or creative inspiration, she sends them to me. She is always right. Here’s just one of the YouTube videos she knew I would love!

If you’re a creative person, actually Taika Waititi says you don’t even have to be creative to take something away from his talk, but I certainly did.

His hilarious presentation technique shows his raw sense of humour, but also his humility. I love that when he was asked to say who he was, he simply answered “I don’t really know, myself”. He explains that his mixed background held many influences, but he never really knew who he was, or what he wanted to do.

Anyone who knows me, knows I am a Disney/MARVEL/Star Wars maniac. So I already love this guy from the movies/series he has directed. And now I have another reason…the way he explains the Art of Creativity.

He says, “Creativity is my Job. Right now I’m a film maker but it’s not my job. My job is to express myself and to share my ideas, my point of view, and it just happens to be that I’m using film making right now. But throughout the years I’ve done lots of different things.”

This resonated with me completely.

I always struggle to explain what I do as a professional creative. What makes sense in my brain is that I see myself as a visual communicator, and I just use various tools to get the message out there. You want to communicate what your business is? We create a logo. You need to communicate the details of your wedding day? We create wedding invitations. I don’t see limitations to designing or creating different forms of communication.

Right now, I love helping small businesses or inspired individuals with my creativity, designing things to help them communicate their message. Maybe it’s not what I will do as a job forever, but right now that’s how I express my creativity.
