Why Logo Variations Are Important For Your Business | Small Business Logo Design

Your company's logo is one of the most important visual elements of your brand identity. It is often the first thing that people think of when they think of your company, so it is important to make sure that it is recognisable, unique, and memorable. However, having just one version of your logo can limit its effectiveness. In this blog post, we'll discuss why having multiple variations of your logo is important for your business.

There are a few reasons why having multiple variations of your logo is important for your business:

  1. It allows you to use your logo in a variety of contexts. For example, you might want to use a horizontal version of your logo on your website, but a vertical version might work better on printed materials such as business cards or flyers.

  2. Having multiple variations gives you the flexibility to change things from time to time. This can be especially important if your business needs a wide range of collateral because you communicate with your audience on several touchpoints.

  3. Having multiple logo variations can help you ensure that your logo looks good in both digital and print contexts.

There are several reasons why having multiple variations of your logo is important for your business. From increasing recognition to providing flexibility during a rebranding, having multiple versions of your logo can be a valuable asset for any business.

What are Logo Variations?

Logo variations are all the modified versions of your business logo.

They are all very similar and will keep your brand consistent across all design collateral and online platforms. Having multiple logo variations ensures you have flexibility around identifying your business. Each logo variation has a specific purpose:

1. PRIMARY LOGO

Found on your website header, brochures, letterhead or email signature.

The primary logo is the main identifying mark for your business and normally the most complex variation. It will often contain text only (wordmark), a combination of text and an illustration or icon unique to your brand. It may also display a tagline. This is the one that is used the most and often is placed at the header of your website.

2. SECONDARY LOGO

Found on your social media or business cards.

Your secondary logo, or alternate logo, is a simplified version of your primary logo. It uses elements of the primary logo arranged tighter, more narrow and much more compact allowing you to use it in a place where there isn’t much width space. Most often, a stacked version of a landscape logo.

3. SUBMARK

Found on your social media profile display, website footers, blog graphics, stickers or presentation slides.

Your submark is a further simplified version of your logo. It may still contain your full business name but typically, it will contain the initials or the brand icon. Submarks are often smaller and tend to be circular or square which makes it ideal for places where a primary or secondary logo wouldn’t fit very well.

In addition, it’s also important to have colour variations of your logos - we recommend having full-colour, black and white version of your logo.

Does your brand currently have Logo Variations?

During the design process, I work with my clients to develop one strong primary logo and secondary logo and then create additional variations depending on the client’s needs.

Remember: your logo alone isn’t a brand.
