The Story Behind Shiplee Studio and Tips for Choosing Your Business Name

Choosing a business name is one of the most personal and important decisions for any entrepreneur. For me, naming my business Shiplee Studio was more than just finding something creative or catchy—it was about honouring my family and staying connected to my roots.

My nan, Myrtle Irene Lee, passed away on November 24th 2024, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, love, and a garden filled with beautiful flowers. Some of my fondest childhood memories are exploring her garden with my siblings and cousins, surrounded by vibrant roses and other blooms. Those moments shaped my appreciation for beauty, creativity, and connection. Naming my studio after my family, with a nod to my nan’s last name, Lee, ensures that her influence and my family’s foundation are part of everything I create.

For me, this name represents more than my work as a graphic designer, illustrator, and artist. It represents who I am and where I come from, blending creativity with a deeply personal meaning.

But what about you? How do you choose a business name that reflects your vision while keeping practicality in mind?

Tips for Choosing the Perfect Business Name

  1. Decide What the Name Should Represent
If you're a sole trader, your business name can be deeply personal—like mine. It can reflect your story, values, or passions. On the other hand, if you're starting a company that you envision scaling or selling one day, you might want a name that feels broader, professional, and less tied to a single individual.

  2. Brainstorm Your Identity
    Ask yourself:

    • What emotions or values do I want my brand to evoke?

    • What’s the story behind my business?

    • Who is my ideal audience, and how do I want to connect with them?

  3. Check Availability
Once you have a name in mind, make sure it’s available:

    • Search for existing businesses with the same name to avoid legal or branding conflicts.

    • Secure the URL domain for your website and emails. A consistent, professional domain (e.g., yourname.com) builds trust and ensures your brand is easy to find online.

    • Check for available social media handles across platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn. Keeping handles consistent with your business name strengthens your brand identity.

  4. Think Long-Term
Choose a name that grows with your business. A narrow or trendy name might limit you in the future. If you expand your services, will the name still make sense?

  5. Be Memorable and Clear
Avoid overly complicated names or acronyms that are hard to spell or pronounce. Simplicity and clarity help customers remember and recommend your business.

  6. Reflect Your Industry and Audience
While creativity is great, ensure the name resonates with your industry and audience. It should align with your brand tone—whether playful, professional, or artistic.

Why Consistency is Key

Once you've chosen a name, consistency is everything. Having a cohesive brand identity across all platforms reinforces trust and recognition. Secure your domain and social handles as early as possible to avoid confusion and make your business easy to find.

Finding Meaning in a Name

For me, Shiplee Studio ties my everyday work to my family and roots. It’s a constant reminder of the people and memories that shaped me, like the vibrant garden my nan nurtured with love. Your business name can be just as meaningful—whether it reflects your personal journey or positions your business for growth.

Take the time to choose a name that feels right for you and your vision. And when you do, make sure it’s protected and consistent so you can focus on what matters most: building your dream.

🌹 Forever in my heart, Nan.
